I hiked the Appalachian Trail in 2014, at the age of 62, as a complete hiking novice. Vowing never to hike again, I wrote a couple of books about my journey, and started podcasting, initially as a method of publicizing my books. Yet the podcast grew far beyond my books and kept me engaged with the hiking community. Since then, I have attempted (and failed) three times on the John Muir Trail, completed the Camino de Santiago (Les Francés), the West Highland Way in Scotland, and a second Appalachian Trail thru-hike. Then, in August / September 2022, I was able to successfully complete the TSX Challenge in California, when I summited Mt Whitney, to erase the memories of my unsuccessful JMT attempts.
Going forward into my 70s, I have little doubt that new adventures will tempt me once more. I'm still up for a challenge!
